The National Movement for Tinubu–Shettima 2027 — Forward Nigeria has commiserated with the government and people of Niger State over the custodial tragedy involving 37 young miners under the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
A statement issued by its National Chairman, Prof Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, noted that “every person in state custody remains entitled to dignity, humane treatment, and the protection of the law”.
The group, therefore, called for a thorough, transparent, independent, and conclusive investigation.
”The National Movement for Tinubu–Shettima 2027 — Forward Nigeria notes with profound grief and pain over the recent unfortunate incident leading to the death of 37 young miners under the custody of the NSDSC in Niger State.
”On behalf of our entire members nationwide, I extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and the Government and people of Niger State
”This is a moment for sobriety, compassion and responsible leadership. Whatever allegations may have been made against the deceased, arrest is not conviction, detention is not punishment, and every person in state custody remains entitled to dignity, humane treatment, and the protection of the law.
”We commend the Governor of Niger State, His Excellency, Mohammed Umar Bago, for initiating the appropriate steps to establish the circumstances surrounding this tragedy. We urge that the investigation should be thorough, transparent, independent and conclusive, including a clear determination of the circumstances and causes of the deaths.
”Where negligence, misconduct or violation of the law is established, appropriate measures should be taken to avoid future similar tragedies. Accountability does not weaken government; it strengthens public confidence in its laws, institutions and leadership. We equally recognise the legitimate duty of government to combat illegal mining and protect our natural resources. But the enforcement of the law must itself remain within the ambit of the law. A strong state must be firm in enforcing its laws, but equally resolute in protecting human life and dignity,” it said.
While appealing for calm and restraint, the group expressed solidarity with the bereaved families.
”We, therefore, appeal for calm and restraint, particularly among the affected families and communities, and urge all concerned to allow the investigative process to run its course.
”This tragedy must ultimately lead not only to answers, but to stronger custodial standards, greater institutional accountability and renewed confidence in our security and justice systems.
”The National Movement for Tinubu Shettima – 2027, stands with the Government and people of Niger State, the bereaved families and all Nigerians affected by this rather unfortunate and painful incident.
”May Almighty God grant eternal rest to the departed and comfort their families,” it added.
