The Police Service Commission (PSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating corruption in police recruitment, promotion, and discipline during a meeting with a delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The meeting, led by Mr. Paul Turay, aimed to brief the new PSC leadership on ongoing collaborations and to ensure the sustainability of existing programs.

Chairman of the PSC, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), emphasized the importance of leveraging the partnership with UNDP to enhance transparency and reduce corruption within the Nigeria Police Force. He highlighted the introduction of a new portal designed for police recruitment, promotion, and discipline, which aims to streamline processes and minimize opportunities for corrupt practices.

DIG Argungu also announced plans to implement written examinations as a requirement for promotions within the police force, a move intended to improve personnel management and ensure only qualified individuals ascend to higher ranks.

The Chairman called for continued support from UNDP to empower the Commission in its mandate to appoint, promote, and discipline police officers. He expressed confidence that the new leadership would bring about positive innovations, aligning the Commission with 21st-century information technology standards.

Mr. Turay, leading the UNDP delegation, congratulated the new PSC leadership and reiterated UNDP’s commitment to supporting the Commission in its efforts to combat corruption and enhance capacity. He assured that the partnership would continue to thrive, focusing on sustainable programs and projects.

The meeting concluded with pledges of cooperation from other PSC members, including DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd) and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission, reinforcing the strong collaborative efforts between the PSC and UNDP in fostering a more transparent and accountable police force.

As the PSC embarks on this renewed partnership, stakeholders remain hopeful about significant advancements in combating corruption within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies.
