The Gombe State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Bello Yahaya, has announced the arrest of a suspect involved in criminal conspiracy and possession of counterfeit currency.

According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the arrest was made on June 28, 2025, at about 2:04 p.m. by officers attached to the Lawanti Airport Division during a routine surveillance operation.

The suspect, identified as Usman Kawu, a 35-year-old resident of Kunji Kwadon Village in Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, was taken to the Amada Police Station for further investigation.

The statement revealed that the suspect was found in possession of ten (10) pieces of 100 United States dollar notes suspected to be counterfeit, totaling $1,000.

The estimated value in Nigerian currency is approximately ₦1.5 million.

Added to that, he was found with ₦10,000 in Nigerian currency, all concealed inside his inner short trousers.

The recovered cash has been documented as exhibits.

During interrogation, Kawu reportedly confessed to the crime but claimed the counterfeit currency was given to him by an accomplice, whose identity is currently being withheld.

The police spokesperson added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the said accomplice and recover further evidence as the investigation continues.

The Gombe State Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating financial crimes and ensuring the safety and security of residents.
