The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed a tragic attack on a bus conveying passengers at Dungus, Kuru District, Jos South Local Government Area.
In a statement, the Command said it received a distress report on September 13, 2026, at about 7:45 p.m., that unidentified gunmen operating on a motorcycle opened fire on a Toyota bus with registration number BUU 621 ZL, which was conveying passengers to Jos.
Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, psc, mnips, fdc, immediately mobilised a team of mobile police personnel, tactical teams, homicide detectives and forensic experts from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to the scene.
Regrettably, seven persons were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others who sustained gunshot injuries and were evacuated to a hospital for medical attention subsequently died, bringing the total number of fatalities to nine.
The Command commiserated with the families of the deceased and the entire residents of Plateau State.
CP Faniyan condemned the act in its entirety, describing it as callous, while praying that God grants the souls of the departed peaceful rest and their families comfort, strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
In a determined effort to apprehend the perpetrators, the Commissioner of Police has launched a total and vigorous manhunt for the criminals and charged all policemen, as well as appealed to other sister security agencies, to synergise and work assiduously to ensure the murderers are brought to justice.
The Command reminded members of the public that the ban on commercial motorcycle operators within areas comprising the Greater Jos Master Plan remains in force and will be enforced totally and diligently. Similarly, operators of commercial motorcycles, also known as “Okada” or “Going”, will be made to face the full weight of the law.
CP Faniyan urged members of the public not to panic but to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious persons or group activities to the police or other security agencies through the designated GSM numbers.
