The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has dismissed reports alleging maltreatment of Nigerian workers by TotalEnergies Nigeria Limited, describing the claims as unauthorized and misleading.

In a statement issued by its National Secretariat, PENGASSAN said it did not at any time issue a press release or provide any document to the media accusing TotalEnergies of harassment, racism, or violations of the Nigerian Local Content Act, as reported in a recent publication by This Day newspaper.

According to the association, the publication relied on an internal document exchanged between staff and management without authorization, an action it described as a serious breach of privacy and confidentiality.

“The National Leadership of PENGASSAN categorically states that it has neither issued any statement on this matter nor provided any document to the media,” the statement read.

PENGASSAN emphasized that it is a structured organization and that only its National Leadership is empowered to communicate the union’s official position on matters affecting its members and the oil and gas industry. The association warned against the misuse of its name to legitimize what it termed unverified allegations, noting that such actions could fuel unnecessary workplace tension and harm the reputation of both the union and the industry.

The union also distanced itself from the group reportedly associated with the claims, stating clearly that it has no connection with the said MIND group.

While reaffirming its commitment to protecting the welfare and professional interests of its members, PENGASSAN stressed that it would not support sensationalism or claims that could undermine industrial harmony in the oil and gas sector.

The association disclosed that it has commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the leak of the internal document and would take appropriate action against those found responsible. It further urged stakeholders and the general public to disregard any statement not officially issued by the National Secretariat.

PENGASSAN reiterated its dedication to dialogue and constructive engagement with stakeholders in the industry as part of its mandate to promote stability and professionalism within the sector.
