    Oshoala announces retirement after WAFCON

    Published on

Nigeria’s football icon and six-time African Women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, has announced she will retire from international football after the 2024/25 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The 30-year-old Super Falcons forward made the revelation via her official Facebook page, stating:

“At 30, with six African Women’s Best Player awards, I will bow out to start a new chapter after WAFCON 2024/25.”

Oshoala’s impending retirement signals the end of one of the most illustrious international careers in African women’s football. Since making her debut for Nigeria in 2014, she has featured in multiple FIFA Women’s World Cups and WAFCON tournaments, playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s continental dominance.

She remains the only woman to have won the CAF African Women’s Player of the Year award a record six times — in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Her personal cabinet boasts a collection of prestigious global and continental honours, underscoring her status as a generational talent:

BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year – 2015;FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Golden Boot & Golden Ball – 2014; African Women’s Championship Golden Ball – 2014; African Women’s Championship Golden Boot – 2016; Primera División Top Scorer – 2021–22; Chinese Women’s Super League Top Scorer – 2017; IFFHS CAF Best Woman Player of the Decade (2011–2020); IFFHS All-Time; Africa Women’s Dream Team – 2021and Queen of the Pitch Award – 2014.

Oshoala’s brilliance transcended borders. She starred in top-flight leagues in England, China, and Spain. At FC Barcelona Femení, she became one of the club’s most prolific scorers, winning multiple league titles and playing a key role in their UEFA Women’s Champions League triumph.

Off the pitch, her influence has been equally profound—motivating a new generation of young African girls to dream beyond limitations and embrace football as a career.
