The abduction of eight prospective corps members (PCMs) and a bus driver in Zamfara in August, while en route from Uyo, Akwa Ibom, to Sokoto, sparked concerns over alleged ransom payments for their release. The NYSC has refuted these claims, clarifying that neither the Akwa Ibom Government nor any other entity paid any ransom for their freedom.

According to Megwa, a spokesperson for the NYSC, the rescue operation was a result of collaborative efforts between security agencies and the NYSC. He emphasized that no state government, individual, or agency made any ransom payments, setting the record straight against circulating news suggesting otherwise.

Megwa assured the public that the NYSC is covering the medical expenses for the rescued youth corps members during their recovery. He also disassociated the scheme from claims that financial contributions were needed for ransom, cautioning against falling prey to misleading information.

While acknowledging the circulation of account numbers and names seeking donations, Megwa urged parents, family members, and the public not to contribute, as the NYSC, in collaboration with security agents, successfully secured the release of four out of the eight kidnapped members without monetary exchange.

The NYSC reiterated its unwavering commitment to the welfare and security of its members, pledging to continue working closely with security agencies to ensure the safe release of the remaining abducted youth corps members.
