Chief Frank Ovie Kokori, a prominent unionist and pro-democracy advocate, has passed away at the age of 80, succumbing to injuries sustained during his pro-democracy struggles. The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) announced Kokori’s demise, describing him as a dedicated defender and fighter for workers’ and democratic rights.

In a statement, NUPENG’s President and General Secretary, Prince Williams Akporeha and Afolabi Olawale, respectively, paid tribute to Kokori’s lifelong commitment to the struggles for workers’ emancipation and the establishment of democratic rule in Nigeria. Despite enduring imprisonment and brutalization during his activism, Kokori continued his fight for justice.

The statement acknowledged that Kokori spent his later years nursing injuries inflicted upon him during these struggles, yet he lived to a good age before peacefully surrendering. NUPENG expressed deep condolences and sympathy to the family and loved ones of the late Elder Statesman, celebrating Kokori’s remarkable life and his significant contributions to the collective struggles for the emancipation of the working people.

While mourning the loss of a great labor icon, NUPENG also expressed gratitude for the positive memories Kokori left behind and took solace in the belief that he is now at peace in the bosom of the Almighty God. The statement concluded with a wish for the soul of Chief Frank Ovie Kokori to rest in peace.
