NPFL reaffirms ban on slot sales, unveils fixtures for 2025/26 season

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has reaffirmed its ban on the sale of league slots, stressing that such transactions violate the core principles of the league’s structure.

Speaking at the league’s Annual General Meeting and official draws in Abuja, NPFL Chairman Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye addressed recent concerns regarding Heartland’s acquisition of Beyond Limits’ slot.

Elegbeleye explained that the intervention became necessary because both Beyond Limits and Remo Stars are owned by the same entity—an arrangement that breaches the NPFL’s rule against dual ownership.

“In this situation, Beyond Limits and Remo Stars are from the same source. We cannot allow one entity to own two clubs in the NPFL; it’s against the rules,” he stated.

He also clarified that no monetary transaction was involved in the transition. “The proprietor of Beyond Limits never mentioned money. We met with them as stakeholders, explained the situation, and they willingly agreed to step aside without any argument or financial demands.”

Elegbeleye revealed that the league had approached other clubs, including Sporting Lagos and Gombe United, who declined the offer to step in. Eventually, Heartland was selected. He emphasized that this scenario was an exception—not a precedent.

“If a similar case arises where a single entity owns two clubs, we’ll handle it the same way. But outside such circumstances, no club will be allowed to sell its slot,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the NPFL confirmed the promotion of Wikki Tourists, Kun Khalifat, Warri Wolves, and Barau FC to the top flight, while Lobi Stars, Akwa United, Heartland, and Sunshine Stars were officially relegated.

The 2025/26 NPFL season draws were also unveiled, featuring several enticing matchups for the opening weekend. Defending champions Remo Stars will face former champions Rivers United in the headline clash. Other fixtures include: Abia Warriors vs Kano Pillars; Wikki Tourists vs Plateau United; Katsina United vs Warri Wolves; Rangers vs Kun Khalifat; Kwara United vs Ikorodu City; Elkanemi Warriors vs Bendel Insurance; 3SC vs Bayelsa United; Barau FC vs Enyimba and Niger Tornadoes vs Nasarawa United

The new NPFL season kicks off on August 22, 2025.
