No voter’ll be left behind, Amupitan assures Nigerians

The nominee for Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, on Thursday, unveiled an ambitious vision for a technology-driven, inclusive electoral system that would leave no Nigerian voter behind — even in the most remote corners of the country.

Speaking during his Senate screening in Abuja, the law professor said one of his top priorities, if confirmed, would be to close the long-standing gaps in election logistics and voter access.

“No voter will be left behind. We will invest in logistics and technology, and where necessary, deploy drones with proper safeguards to ensure election materials and officials reach every polling unit — no matter how distant or difficult to access,” he assured Nigerians.

Amupitan said Nigeria’s size, terrain, and security challenges demand new thinking and bold innovation in election management, promising to collaborate closely with the Joint Committee on Election Security (JCES) to make elections safer and more efficient.

But beyond technology, the nominee placed strong emphasis on building people’s capacity and confidence in democracy. He said INEC under his leadership would embark on massive civic and voter education to empower citizens, strengthen institutions, and deepen public trust.

“We will build the capacity of everyone involved — INEC staff, political parties, civil society organisations, and voters themselves. An enlightened electorate is the foundation of credible elections. When people understand the process, they participate freely and defend the outcome,” he said.

Amupitan said the commission would fully implement its civic education mandate under Section 2 of the Electoral Act, adding that collaboration with communities, youth groups, and local organisations would be key to expanding reach and impact.

He also pledged transparency and fiscal prudence, assuring senators that funds appropriated to INEC would be used strictly for their intended purposes.

“We will enforce every financial and procurement law to ensure integrity in how INEC’s resources are managed. Our commitment is to efficiency, accountability, and public confidence,” he said.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the screening, commended Amupitan’s clarity of purpose and directed him to take note of senators’ questions for further responses.

Amupitan’s nomination came at a crucial time as Nigeria seeks to strengthen electoral credibility and restore citizens’ faith in the ballot. His promise — to blend innovation with inclusivity — signals what could be a new chapter for the nation’s democracy.
