NMA halts strike, gives FG 21-day ultimatum

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its planned strike, granting the federal government 21 days to address long-standing demands affecting doctors and the health sector.

The decision followed an Emergency Delegates Meeting held in Abuja on Monday, according to a communiqué signed by NMA President, Bala Audu, and Secretary-General, Jamin Egbo.

The association expressed concern over unresolved welfare issues and the “difficult working conditions” faced by medical professionals, calling for urgent action to improve morale and retain skilled personnel.

The NMA’s move was in response to a June 27 circular issued by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission on the review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), which the association described as inconsistent with earlier agreements.

Among its key demands are the withdrawal of the circular, correction of discrepancies between the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), and full implementation of the 2001 Collective Bargaining Agreement on professional allowances.

The NMA also requested the payment of clinical duty and accoutrement allowances, as well as an upward review of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund to strengthen the training of future doctors.

While urging constructive engagement to avoid disruptions in healthcare delivery, the association expressed optimism that the Tinubu administration would respond decisively within the 21-day window.

“The government must take swift and meaningful steps in the interest of public health and the well-being of Nigeria’s dedicated medical workforce,” the communiqué said.
