The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has applauded Governor Umo Eno for approving an enhanced salary structure and special allowances for doctors and other health workers in the state.
Eno had, during the last State Executive Council meeting, announced that the new welfare package would take effect from November 1, 2025, a move expected to help curb the brain drain among medical professionals.
Addressing journalists on Sunday at the Doctors’ Mess in Uyo, the state NMA Chairman, Dr. Aniekan Peter, described the governor’s decision as a welcome step towards improving healthcare delivery and boosting morale among medical staff.
“In the communiqué, we expressed our gratitude to the governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, for the new welfare package for medical doctors and other health care workers in the state. The new welfare package is a much-needed boost for medical doctors and other healthcare workers who have been struggling with inadequate compensation for their hard work,” Peter said.
Peter noted that the NMA’s recognition of the governor’s gesture came as part of activities marking the 2025 National Physicians’ Week, which celebrates the role of physicians in promoting community health.
He called on the Federal Government to adopt similar measures nationwide to prevent further industrial unrest in the sector.
Describing the governor’s move as a “commendable step towards valuing the contributions of physicians,” Peter also highlighted the difficult working conditions faced by Nigerian doctors.
“While a doctor in a developed country may see 20 patients in a day, in Nigeria, it is not uncommon for a doctor to see above 60 patients in a busy clinic,” he said.
The NMA chairman added that the association would, during the week, honour outstanding members through a series of awards in seven categories, including Doctor of the Year, Consultant of the Year, and Resident Doctor of the Year, among others.
