In a bold move to address the grievances of Nigerian workers and protect their rights, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike. The strike is a response to the failure of the Federal Government to conclude and pass into law a new National Minimum Wage Act, as well as the refusal to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariff to N65/kwh.

The NLC and TUC made this announcement in a press conference on Friday in Abuja. Expressing disappointment and concern, the NLC and TUC highlight the lack of commitment from the government in meeting the demands of the workers and the people. The absence of governors and most ministers during a recent meeting further demonstrated the government’s apparent disregard for the negotiation process. The labor unions view this as disdainful and reflective of the government’s lack of commitment to a successful resolution.

The demand for a new National Minimum Wage Act and the reversal of the electricity tariff hike has been a long-standing issue. Despite clear ultimatums and protests by the unions, the government has shown no significant progress or positive response. Nigerian workers, who are the backbone of the country’s economy, deserve fair and decent wages that align with the current economic realities.

The unions argue that the government’s inaction not only neglects its responsibility to the workforce but also impoverishes the already suffering people. The hike in electricity tariff denies citizens the right to a decent living. Instead of engaging in a meaningful dialogue, the government has resorted to propaganda.

In light of the persistent inaction, the NLC and TUC have jointly declared an indefinite nationwide strike, starting on Monday, June 3, 2024. The unions emphasize that this industrial action is a result of the government’s failure to conclude the minimum wage negotiation, reverse the electricity tariff hike, and address the categorization of consumers into Bands.

The NLC and TUC call on all affiliates, state councils, civil society organizations, market traders, and the general public to rally behind their cause. They stress that the welfare of Nigerian workers and people is non-negotiable, and they are prepared to take all necessary steps to protect their rights and ensure their voices are heard.

While the unions regret the inconveniences this strike may cause, they are determined to pursue this cause until a satisfactory resolution is reached. The NLC and TUC stand united in their commitment to fight for the welfare of Nigerian workers and the people.
