The Nigerian community in Manitoba is in mourning following the tragic death of Afolabi Stephen, a 19-year-old Nigerian student, who was fatally shot by Canadian police on December 31, 2023.

According to a statement released on the Winnipeg Police Service’s website (winnipeg.ca), officers responded to a 911 call reporting a male exhibiting erratic behavior at an apartment suite in the first 100 block of University Crescent.

The statement from the police indicated, “Upon police arrival, they were confronted by an armed male. During this encounter, an officer discharged his firearm, striking the male. Officers provided immediate medical care and ensured the well-being of all other parties on the scene. Nobody else was injured. The male was transported to the hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries.”

Expressing sorrow over Afolabi’s death, the Nigerian Association of Manitoba (NAMI) issued a statement urging calm while the investigation is ongoing. NAMI’s president, Vera Obehi Keyede, conveyed condolences to the deceased’s family and friends, acknowledging the distress within the community.

In the statement, NAMI emphasized the importance of not engaging in activities that could escalate tension or impede the investigative process. The association recognized the community’s right to seek answers and justice and assured that it is closely monitoring the situation, seeking guidance on the appropriate course of action.

NAMI pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available and extended support to those affected by the unfortunate incident. The association underscored the need for solidarity during this challenging time and called on the Nigerian community to remain calm and composed as investigations unfold.
