The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, or NCAA, on behalf of the Federal Government has expressed disapproval of the recent high number of aircraft cancellations and delays.
According to NCAA Acting Director-General Chris Najomo, 2,434 of the 5,291 flights that were serviced in September 2024 experienced delays, and 79 were canceled.
He added that 111 flights were canceled and 2791 flights were delayed out of the 5,513 flights that were flown in October 2024.
During a stakeholders’ meeting on Friday with the subject “Finding lasting solutions to flight disruptions,” Najomo revealed this.
In light of the many flight cancellations and delays throughout the holiday season, Najomo met with airline CEOs on Friday.
Airline operators are attending the stakeholders conference; the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, representatives of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET, among others.
Allen Onyema, the chairman and CEO of Air Peace, is there together with other airline operators association members.
In reference to the flying issues, Najomo said he has received numerous calls from the Ministry, the National Assembly, and the Presidency.
“The president of the Senate contacted to inquire what we were doing to address these problems. “In the past week, a lot has happened,” he remarked.
Najomo added that he would not sit back and watch things go wrong, even if he understands the difficulties the airlines confront because he was an operator before becoming a regulator.
