Nigerian Federal Colleges of Education will grant bachelor’s degrees

    Published on

The Dual Mandate Policy has been formally implemented by the Federal Government at all Federal Colleges of Education (FCOEs).

This comes after the Federal Colleges of Education Act of 2023 was passed.

Folasade Boriowo, the Director of Press for the Federal Ministry of Education, attested to this in a statement.

The Act, passed into law by President Bola Tinubu, authorizes FCOEs to concurrently award the Nigeria Certificate in Education and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education.

This is a major turning point in the transformation of teacher education in Nigeria.

Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa hailed the policy’s adoption as a brave and forward-thinking move as he announced its start in Abuja.

“The Dual Mandate Policy represents not just a reform but a revolution in teacher preparation enabling FCOEs to offer both NCE and Bachelor’s degrees.

“This initiative improves the quality of classroom instruction throughout Nigeria, expands access, and empowers institutions,” he stated.

The Act states that any FCOE that satisfies the requirements set forth by the National Universities Commission can henceforth function under the Dual Mandate.

As long as the prerequisites are fulfilled, this inclusive strategy guarantees that institutions can take part, regardless of when they were established.
