Abuja,The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has received commendation for its efforts in curtailing the influx and proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country. The commendation was issued by Major General Abba Dikko (Rtd), the National Coordinator of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), during a courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar.
According to a statement signed by Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force, the NAF has been instrumental in assisting the Centre with the transportation, storage, and security of seized weapons. This collaboration has significantly eased the burden of work for the Centre, and Major General Dikko expressed his appreciation for the commitment and diligence demonstrated by the NAF in ridding the country of small arms and light weapons.
Recognizing the direct correlation between the proliferation of these weapons and the level of insecurity in the country, Air Marshal Abubakar applauded the establishment of the NCCSALW and its efforts in curbing the illegal spread and flow of arms within Nigeria. He further commended the Centre for establishing a database to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate arms in the country, which will greatly assist security agencies and the Federal Government in managing weapons and ammunition.
During the visit, Major General Dikko solicited the CAS’s influence in the passage of the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill 2023, currently before the Senate of the National Assembly. Air Marshal Abubakar assured the Coordinator of the NAF’s continued support to the Centre as it works towards achieving its mandate.
The NAF remains committed to its partnership with the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in securing the nation and ensuring peace and prosperity for all Nigerians.
