In the ongoing fight against oil theft and economic sabotage in the Niger Delta Region, the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe has recently conducted a series of air operations. Over the past three days, six illegal refining sites and five Cotonou boats have been destroyed in Rivers State.
In a statement by Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force on Tuesday stated that on November 12, 2023, intelligence reports indicated the presence of three active illegal refining sites and two Cotonou boats siphoning crude oil from pipelines in Cawthorne Channel and Alakri, both located in Rivers State. The air component quickly engaged and destroyed these sites and boats. Additionally, strikes were carried out at Krakama in Rivers State, targeting three Cotonou boats suspected of transporting illegal refined products.
On November 13, 2023, Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft carried out strikes in Dariama Village, also in Rivers State, following intelligence reports of illegal refining activities. During the operation, three illegal refining sites were discovered along with tanks, pipes, pumping machines, and Cotonou boats loaded with suspected illegally refined products. All of these were engaged and subsequently destroyed.
These intensified air operations signify proactive measures aimed at safeguarding the nation’s economic interests and deterring criminal elements involved in oil theft. The NAF, in collaboration with sister services and other security agencies, remains dedicated to securing vital government resources and infrastructure not only in the Niger Delta Region but also beyond.
