The University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, will once again have electricity thanks to an agreement with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, or IBEDC.
Adebayo Adelabu, the minister of power, made the statement on Monday while visiting the hospital.
For the past year, UCH has been experiencing power outages.
In 2024, IBEDC turned off the hospital’s electricity three times.
The power supply will now be restored within 48 hours, as agreed upon by the electricity distribution firm.
This was one of the decisions made during the three-way discussion between Adelabu, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, the Chief Medical Director of UCH, and Francis Agoha, the Managing Director of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
According to our correspondent, some medical students were demonstrating near the meeting location while the discussion was in progress.
Speaking after the meeting, Adelabu declared that all of the problems associated with the ongoing power crisis had been settled.
He called the ongoing power problem a disgrace to the federal government as well as the hospital’s management.
“The UCH’s power crisis has gotten embarrassing.” The hospital being completely dark for such a long time is really embarrassing. The issue persists despite my repeated attempts to address it.
The University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), the University of Calabar, Maidiguri, and Abuja were among the other teaching hospitals that experienced a comparable problem.

The College of Medicine and the University of Ibadan will both undergo similar procedures. The first and second quarters of this year will see the completion of the 50 mgw solar mini grid installation by the federal government.
Additionally, the IBEDC has committed to restoring power to a portion of the hospital within 48 hours of this happening, and N283 million would be paid in installments.
In addition to the present cost, he said, “the management of the UCH has agreed on immediate settlement of the debt on installment payment, which will be between 8-12 months.”
