Kaduna, Nigeria – The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Kaduna was presented with a request yesterday to nullify the governorship election held on March 18, 2023, in which Senator Uba Sani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner. The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Hon. Jonathan Asake, and the LP’s lead counsel, Barrister Abah Ejembi, along with two colleagues, raised concerns of non-compliance with the electoral act, irregularities, and widespread vote buying, urging the court to invalidate the entire electoral process.
In an interview following the hearing, Barr. Ejembi explained that the LP’s petition, referenced as EPT/KD/Gov/2/2023, sought the nullification of the governorship election in Kaduna State.
“Our complaint before the court is based on non-compliance with the electoral act and extensive vote buying. In our petition, we request the court to invalidate the entire process,” Barr. Ejembi stated.
He further emphasized, “We are urging the court to nullify the election due to significant irregularities, non-compliance with the electoral act, and acts of corruption during the process.”
During the pre-hearing session, the court addressed the procedures and requirements for filing applications, including the timeframe for submission and responses.
Chairman of the panel, Justice Victor O. Oviawe, adjourned the matter to June 15, 2023, for the hearing of all filed applications and those yet to be submitted. The panel also includes Justice D.A Damulak and Justice N. Nonye.
