Lamido raises the alarm: PDP crisis could doom Nigeria’s democracy

Former Jigawa State Governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has warned that Nigeria’s democracy risks imminent collapse if desperate attempts to shield certain political actors from accountability are not checked.

Lamido, in a strongly worded statement on his Facebook Wall, alleged that some PDP state chairmen were recently summoned by “powerful lords of Nigeria” and instructed to resist any disciplinary action against FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and his loyalists.

He described the move as a dangerous plot that could fast-track the disintegration of the PDP and weaken Nigeria’s already fragile democratic foundations.

“This desperation to hasten the collapse of the PDP will inevitably hasten the collapse of our nascent democracy, with dire consequences,” Lamido warned.

The former governor stressed that saving democracy transcends partisan politics and should be a collective responsibility of both the ruling APC and the opposition.

“Let us all unite and save democracy — the APC government and all the opposition parties alike,” he urged.

Lamido’s remarks come at a time when internal wrangling continues to rock the PDP, with Wike and his loyalists accused of working at cross purposes with the party’s leadership.

His intervention reflects growing concern that unchecked factionalism could further erode the opposition’s ability to serve as a counterbalance in Nigeria’s political space.
