Lagos starts Carter Railway Drainage project to curb flooding in Ebute Metta

    Published on

Lagos State Government has commenced plans to address persistent flooding in Ebute Metta with the construction of the Carter Railway Drainage Channel.

The project is a major stormwater management initiative aimed at alleviating long-standing flooding challenges in the area.

The drainage channel is designed to convey runoff through the Nigerian Railway Corporation NRC, corridor and empty into the Iponri confluence along Western Avenue, providing lasting relief to residents and businesses affected by seasonal flooding.

The initiative was unveiled during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the NRC compound and is expected to provide a long-term solution to flooding that has affected the railway community and surrounding neighborhoods for decades.

Officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources disclosed that the contract for the project, officially designated as the Carter Railway Channel (System 4), has already been awarded, with construction scheduled to commence shortly.

Speaking at the meeting, the Director of Drainage Services, Mr Adedapo Ajadi, explained that the reinforced concrete drainage channel would stretch from Murtala Muhammed Way, pass through the NRC corridor, and terminate at Iponri.

He noted that the project would reduce flood risks and offer sustained relief to residents, public institutions, and businesses within the railway environment and across the wider Lagos Mainland.
