A social cultural group, the Okun Development Association (ODA) has expressed confidence in the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, based on his track record of discipline and fidelity to due process, to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral credibility.
ODA President General, Amb. Chief Akenson Rotimi, in a statement in Lokoja on Thursday declared the association’s unflinching support for Amupitan as he piloted the affairs of the electoral umpire.
The group describes his appointment by President Bola Tinubu as “a clear endorsement of competence and character” and “a call to national service, anchored on merit.”
The association said the confidence reposed in Amupitan is an honour to Okunland, Kogi State, and to every Nigerian who believes public office should reward integrity and capacity.
“His public and academic record reflect uncommon discipline, fidelity to due process, and abiding respect for institutions,” the statement read.
ODA emphasised that in every assignment handled, Amupitan has shown the temperament, intellectual depth, and moral courage required to manage sensitive national duties with fairness and firmness.
“We are assured that these qualities will guide his stewardship of the Commission,” it added.
The association said the new INEC boss personifies values Okunland holds dear: honesty, hard work, humility, and service above self.
It described him as a scholar who has raised generations of Nigerians now serving in critical sectors, and as an administrator who had built systems that outlast individuals.
The association stressed that his commitment to strong, impartial institutions was exactly what INEC requires to consolidate public trust.
“Under his leadership, the commission will discharge its constitutional mandate without fear or favour, and his tenure will strengthen the credibility of our electoral process,” the group stated.
ODA acknowledged that the office of INEC Chairman would always attract intense public scrutiny, but called for restraint.
The association urged stakeholders, political actors, and citizens to channel grievances through established legal and institutional mechanisms.
“We call for restraint in public commentary and ask all Nigerians to grant Prof. Amupitan the calm and institutional space needed to serve the nation with neutrality, courage and desired result,” it stated.
The ODA reaffirmed its commitment to national unity, democratic stability, and the success of the Tinubu administration.
It assured the President and Nigerians that Amupitan will discharge his responsibilities with honour and “bring credibility and candour to his office, to Okunland, and to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The group requested the prayers and goodwill of all citizens as the new INEC Chairman undertakes “this solemn duty for the nation,”
The association extended appreciation to President Tinubu for the appointment.
