Izekor takes anti-digital violence campaign to community, harps on women’s inclusion

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councillorship candidate for City Ward and founder of the Loveth Izekor Foundation, Loveth Izekor, has engaged her community on the dangers of digital violence against women and girls, blaming the unchecked proliferation of digital platforms for many of the risks confronting the female population.

Izekor, who also convenes the Loveth Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), spoke at a one-day programme marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Digital Violence Against Women and Girls, organised by her foundation in Abuja.

She said the rapid expansion of digital platforms has exposed users, particularly women and girls, to unprecedented threats such as cyberbullying, online exploitation and digital manipulation, which she noted continue to erode their safety, dignity and opportunities.

“As someone deeply committed to community development and advocacy for inclusive growth, I am particularly pleased that we are gathered to address this pressing issue. Digital violence against women and girls is a scourge that demands urgent attention. While technology has opened doors, it has also created new avenues for abuse,” she said.

Izekor acknowledged the positive impact of digital platforms, including improved access to information, networking opportunities and the amplification of marginalised voices. She noted that, when properly harnessed, technology can help bridge social and economic divides, foster global connectivity and promote cultural exchange.

However, she warned that the darker side of digital engagement cannot be ignored.

“The non-consensual sharing of intimate content, cyberstalking and online harassment are just a few examples of the harm being inflicted on women and girls daily,” she said, adding that recent regulatory actions, such as restrictions on certain social media activities in Australia, highlight the need for proactive responses.

According to her, tackling digital violence requires more than legislation alone. She stressed the importance of rebuilding strong community values anchored on respect, responsibility and ethical digital behaviour.

“Families, schools, religious institutions and community groups must take the lead in promoting digital literacy, consent and proper online conduct. Men also have a critical role to play in this advocacy, and their involvement is essential if we are to make real progress,” Izekor said.

Beyond awareness, the PDP councillorship candidate used the platform to call for greater political empowerment of women, arguing that meaningful change would only occur when women are adequately represented in decision-making spaces.

She specifically urged the passage of the Reserved Seats Bill for Women in the House of Representatives and the Senate, describing it as a crucial step towards strengthening women’s voices in governance and ensuring that policies addressing the needs of women and girls receive the attention they deserve.

According to Izekor, increased female representation would not only advance gender equity but also enhance policy outcomes and community development at all levels.
