Israeli group backs Nobel Peace Prize push for Trump

    Published on

An Israeli advocacy group has called for US President Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, praising his efforts to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of hostages.

In a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Monday, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said Trump made “possible what many said was impossible,” urging the committee to recognise his “determination to bring peace” to the region.

“We strongly urge you to award President Trump the Nobel Peace Prize because he has vowed he will not rest and will not stop until every last hostage is back home,” the group said in a statement.

The appeal comes as high-stakes negotiations between Israel and Hamas are set to begin later in the day in Egypt, following a 20-point peace plan Trump announced last week.

The forum said Trump’s “comprehensive plan to release all remaining hostages and finally end this terrible war is on the table,” adding, “In this past year, no leader or organisation has contributed more to peace around the world than President Trump.”

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize, though experts believe his chances are slim. He has claimed to have resolved “six or seven wars in as many months,” a figure experts describe as exaggerated.

His nomination has gained traction through endorsements from several high-profile figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Nobel Peace Prize nomination process involves formal submissions from qualified individuals and organizations, followed by an evaluation by the five-member Nobel Committee in Norway. Nominations are typically confidential, though some nominators choose to make their endorsements public.

Longtime Nobel watchers say Trump’s prospects remain uncertain despite his diplomatic initiatives and multiple nominations since 2018. Analysts note that the Nobel Committee often prioritizes sustained peace efforts, international cooperation, and institutional contributions—areas where Trump’s record may face scrutiny.

Critics also point to his confrontational approach to multilateral institutions and his stance on global climate issues, which may weigh against him.

Still, Trump continues to publicly court the prize. Speaking to United Nations delegates last month, he said, “Everyone says that I should get the Nobel Peace Prize.”

He has also hinted that if his proposed Israel–Hamas peace plan succeeds, it could be his ticket to the award. “Nobody’s ever done that,” he told military leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. “Will you get the Nobel Prize? Absolutely not. They’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing.”

Trump has been nominated several times by both US lawmakers and foreign politicians, including a recent nomination from US Representative Claudia Tenney for brokering the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states in 2020.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted among residents in Washington, D.C. found mixed opinions about Trump’s Nobel aspirations. Some respondents said winning the prize would require a lasting peace deal in Gaza, while others doubted his chances altogether.
