Gusau fancies Abakaliki FC ahead FA Cup final clash

    Published on

President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, has commended Abakaliki FC for their remarkable journey to the final of the 2025 President’s FA Cup, describing the team’s run as one of the most inspiring stories of the tournament.

Abakaliki FC, a club that was recently relegated to the Nationwide League One (NLO), defied the odds by defeating top-flight sides including Katsina United, Enyimba International, and Ikorodu City to book their place in the final. They now face Kwara United in what promises to be a thrilling showdown.

Alhaji Gusau hailed the performance of the underdog side, noting that their achievement underscores the depth of talent in the Nigerian National League (NNL).

He emphasized that surprises like these are part of what makes the FA Cup the most exciting and unpredictable competition in Nigerian football.

“In the history of the FA Cup, NNL clubs have proven their worth, and Abakaliki FC’s presence in this year’s final is a testament to their quality,” Gusau said. “Their journey highlights how competitive our lower divisions have become.”

Despite their relegation, Abakaliki FC have shown grit and determination throughout the competition. The team insists they will pose a strong challenge to Kwara United and aim to replicate the success of El-Kanemi Warriors FC, who emerged victorious from the NNL in the previous edition.

“This is not the first time we are seeing a club from the NNL in the final. El-Kanemi Warriors were there last time and won it. The NNL is a very competitive league and anything can happen,” Gusau added.

The NFF President expressed optimism that the final will deliver on entertainment, passion, and quality football. He reiterated the Federation’s commitment to a neutral and fair competition.

“We don’t have a preference for any particular team, and we’re not influencing the outcome. The beauty of the FA Cup, which is our longest and oldest football challenge, lies in its unpredictability,” he said.

With the final match set to take place later this week at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, excitement is building across the country. Football fans are eagerly anticipating a historic clash that could see a second consecutive NNL team lift the prestigious FA Cup trophy.

The NFF has assured supporters that all logistical and security arrangements are in place to ensure a successful and memorable final.
