Gunman wounds troops after attacking an Israeli military checkpoint

    Published on

In the occupied West Bank, a gunman opened fire on an Israeli military checkpoint Tuesday, killing two soldiers before being shot dead by troops.

The shooting happened in the morning at a military position in Tayasir, in the northern region of the West Bank, according to a statement from the military, which also added that the gunman was killed by the forces during a shootout.

It stated that “a terrorist opened fire on soldiers at a military post in Tayasir.”

Six other soldiers suffered minor injuries in the attack, while two others suffered serious injuries, the military said.

Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian terrorist organization, applauded the checkpoint strike and declared that the resistance will not let up until the occupation was overthrown.

The army claims that Israeli troops have been fighting terrorism in and around the northern city of Jenin, which has long been a militancy hotspot.

The attack demonstrated the need to continue the operation in the northern portion of the area, according to Major General Avi Bluth, the Israeli commander in charge of the West Bank.

When Bluth visited the location, he told reporters, “This morning’s engagement with a despicable terrorist who emerged from the northern Samaria region is the demonstration of the necessity of the counterterrorism operation.” He also promised to “neutralize militants in the area.”

Since the operation began on January 21, the army claimed to have killed at least 50 insurgents on Sunday.

Israeli forces have killed 70 civilians in the area since the year began, the Palestinian health ministry reported on Monday.

The Palestinian Authority in Ramallah has condemned the operation, calling Israel’s actions “ethnic cleansing.” Troops have also been seen leveling buildings in the city’s refugee camp.

According to a spokesperson for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, the situation in the Jenin refugee camp was rapidly becoming disastrous.

In a series of explosions, the Israeli forces totally demolished large portions of the camp. One hundred homes were either completely destroyed or severely damaged, according to Juliette Touma.

Since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, strike from Gaza triggered conflict with Israel, violence has increased throughout the West Bank.

Since the war began, Israeli troops or settlers have murdered at least 884 Palestinians in the West Bank, many of them militants, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

At least 32 Israelis have lost their lives in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations in the region during the same time period, according to official Israeli numbers.
