The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians of its commitment to upholding people’s rights and press freedom while addressing the issue of fake news and disinformation in the country. Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, emphasized this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

Idris urged Nigerians to consistently champion the cause of truth, emphasizing that the promotion of accurate information is crucial. He expressed concerns that the spread of fake news can lead to chaos and the destruction of lives and property, asserting that no one desires their home, country, state, or nation to be in turmoil due to the dissemination of false information.

The Minister condemned fake news in all its forms and highlighted the importance of careful navigation through these turbulent waters. He stressed the need to combat fake news without compromising people’s rights, a free press, and freedom of information. Idris also commended individuals who are using various platforms to provide credible information, encouraging others to follow suit.

In summary, the government is determined to tackle fake news without infringing on the rights of its citizens, including press freedom and the freedom of information.
