Electricity generation across Nigeria’s National Grid has dropped significantly following gas supply constraints caused by the vandalization of a major gas pipeline, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has said.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NISO disclosed that the disruption has reduced gas availability to several gas-fired power plants, leading to a decline in total generation capacity nationwide. The development comes at a critical time as electricity demand is expected to rise with the approaching festive season.
According to the system operator, the gas shortfall has compelled a number of thermal power stations to scale down output, placing additional pressure on the grid. NISO warned that the situation could affect power supply if not swiftly addressed.
To manage the impact, NISO said it has activated contingency measures designed to ensure grid stability and reliability. These include increased dispatch from available hydroelectric power plants, continuous generation re-dispatch, and voltage control interventions aimed at balancing supply with current demand levels.
The operator noted that it is closely monitoring grid conditions, particularly system frequency and voltage profiles, while working with relevant stakeholders to minimize disruptions arising from the gas supply challenges.
NISO emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among industry players to safeguard the power system, especially during periods of high electricity consumption.
Reassuring the public, NISO management affirmed its commitment to proactive grid management and strict adherence to operational standards, stating that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain a secure, stable, and reliable electricity supply across the country.
