Flood: NEMA deploys ambulances to Kaduna, Owerri, Uyo

In a bid to improve emergency preparedness in advance of the predicted flood season, the National Emergency Management Agency has sent Mobile Intensive Care Unit ambulances to its operating offices in Kaduna, Owerri, and Uyo.

The agency’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, approved the deployment after an internal assessment identified equipment gaps in several field offices.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by NEMA’s Press Unit, Umar described the move as a strategic measure to enhance the operational capacity of zonal directorates and regional offices.

“With the increasing risk of climate-induced disasters, particularly flooding, our teams must be well-equipped to provide immediate and effective life-saving interventions,” she said.

The ambulances, she noted, are fully equipped with modern emergency medical tools, including oxygen systems, patient monitoring devices, suction kits, and other essential life support equipment to improve the quality of care during disaster response.

The agency added that the deployment is consistent with its ongoing push to optimise resources and improve sub-national disaster management capacity.

In recent months, NEMA has stepped up flood preparedness activities across Nigeria, conducting simulation drills, distributing relief materials to high-risk communities, and issuing early warnings in collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NMA) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA). These measures are aimed at reducing the human and economic toll of seasonal floods that have displaced thousands in previous years.
