The federal government has announced a 50 percent increase in the feeding allowance for inmates in the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS). This decision follows the emergence of a viral video showing inmates at a correctional centre in Calabar, Cross River State, complaining about inadequate food.

Umar Abubakar, the spokesperson for the NCoS, disclosed this update on Thursday, August 5, during a press briefing for the Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Committee (SCIPC) in Abuja. Abubakar explained that the increment is part of an initial review aimed at addressing the rising cost of food across the country.

“The viral video does not accurately represent the Nigeria Correctional Service or its commitment to the reform and rehabilitation of inmates,” Abubakar stated. “Since the renaming of the service, significant strides have been made in improving the conditions and rehabilitation efforts for those in our custody.”

Abubakar also noted that the NCoS has launched an investigation into the video. “We have initiated a thorough investigation into the video’s claims. However, details of the findings cannot be disclosed at this time,” he added.

In addition to the increase in feeding allowances, the NCoS continues to focus on providing a conducive environment for inmate rehabilitation. “Currently, we have over 1,000 inmates engaged in various degree programs, 282 pursuing diplomas and master’s degrees, and six enrolled in PhD programs. Three of these PhD students are already writing their theses,” Abubakar said.

The NCoS is also emphasizing skill acquisition and educational opportunities for inmates to aid their successful reintegration into society.
