The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to enforce the nationwide ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs), marking a major step toward sustainable environmental management.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, said the policy aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to global environmental standards and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Represented by Mohammed Danjuma, Permanent Secretary of the Overseeing General Services Office, Akume said the decision followed a Federal Executive Council meeting held on June 25, 2024.
He explained that the ban targets products like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, styrofoam, plastic bags, sachet water, and straws — all of which have become major sources of environmental pollution.
“The inappropriate disposal of plastics causes marine pollution and land degradation,” he said. “Plastic wastes take a long time to decompose and pose serious threats to wildlife and public health.”
The committee, which includes representatives from key Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and stakeholders, will coordinate the nationwide phase-out of SUPs, assess the policy’s impact, and promote best practices within the plastic value chain.
