FCTA begins rehabilitation of Primary Healthcare Centres

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) said it has begun the rehabilitation of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the six area councils of the territory.

Speaking at a one-day media orientation on the Integrated Vaccination Campaign in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), held in Abuja on Tuesday, the Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Health Care Board (PHCB), Dr. Rukayat Wamakko, noted that the rehabilitation of over 300 PHCs in the FCT by the administration is being done gradually and in phases.

Wamakko disclosed that the present administration inherited a very neglected primary healthcare system in the nation’s capital, adding that efforts are ongoing to revitalise the facilities.

She appealed to residents of the FCT to exercise patience while awaiting the upgrade of the health centres, adding that the government is aware of shortages in human resources and other challenges, which are also being addressed.

Wamakko explained that the integrated vaccination campaign, scheduled from 6th to 18th October 2025, is intended to immunise children aged nine months to 14 years against rubella and measles.

She appealed to parents in the nation’s capital to cooperate with vaccinators to ensure a seamless vaccination exercise throughout the period.

In a paper titled “The Role of the Media in Mobilising for Participation and Strengthening Immunisation”, the Deputy Director of Health Education, FCT-PHCB, Mrs. Umeh Chinyere, disclosed that a minimum of 1.5 million doses of vaccines have been made available for the immunisation exercise.

Umeh noted that the media has continued to provide purposeful and innovative leadership in ensuring successful vaccination campaigns across the country.

She added that the media remains an important channel for debunking and correcting false information, as it helps spread accurate information fast and far across networks. She warned that misleading information could lead to public health crises by worsening disease spread and overwhelming healthcare systems.
