Kabir Nadabo, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kaduna State, reported a tragic incident on the Zaria-Kano expressway resulting in the loss of 12 lives and injuries to 28 individuals.
According to Mr. Nadabo, the accident occurred at Tashar Yari village at 7:36 a.m. on Monday, involving a trailer bearing registration number KTG 454 ZZ en route to Kano.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash was caused by wrongful overtaking, speeding, and overloading, factors contributing to the severity of the accident.
Mr. Nadabo mentioned that the Chairman of Makarfi Local Government and the Unit Commander of Tashar Yari were present at the scene to assess the situation.
The aftermath of the incident revealed that out of the 40 individuals involved, 28 sustained injuries and 12 lost their lives. The injured were promptly transported to Makarfi General Hospital for further medical attention.
Efforts have been made to inform the owner of the vehicle, located in Azare, Bauchi State, to report to the Kaduna Sector Command. Additionally, it was noted that the driver of the trailer was among the deceased.
Mr. Nadabo emphasized that such accidents are preventable, reiterating the FRSC’s commitment to engaging with stakeholders, particularly transport unions, to educate drivers on the dangers of reckless driving practices, including speeding, overloading, and phone usage while driving.
He urged motorists to prioritize safety on the roads, especially on highways, and emphasized the FRSC’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders and the media to promote road safety awareness.
The appeal to motorists is to cultivate a culture of safe driving practices to mitigate the occurrence of tragic incidents like the one witnessed on the Zaria-Kano expressway.
