Failed Attempt to Remove Umar Damagum as PDP Acting National Chairman

Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has successfully weathered attempts to depose him from his position.

Leading up to the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, discussions among party officials revolved around whether Damagum should retain his position or be replaced.

Having assumed the role of acting National Chairman following the court suspension of Iyorchia Ayu, Damagum faced scrutiny amid calls for his removal by some members of the House of Representatives.

However, divisions emerged within the House minority caucus regarding Damagum’s tenure, with disagreements overshadowing the pre-NEC meeting’s intended vote of confidence in Damagum.

Despite the North Central Zone’s decision to nominate the next national chairman of the party, the PDP’s National Caucus meeting endorsed Damagum’s continuation in his acting capacity.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, confirmed Damagum’s continued role until further consultations could be conducted at the subsequent NEC meeting.

The National Caucus also addressed forthcoming party activities, including congresses and the reconstitution of disciplinary and reconciliation committees. Additionally, fundraising strategies and the extension of the Constitution Review Committee’s tenure were discussed.

Regarding Damagum’s leadership, Ologunagba emphasized the need for unity and adherence to constitutional processes. He reiterated the party’s commitment to resolving internal issues without causing division.

The National Caucus directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to review the Rivers State Caretaker Committee list, opting for a political solution to address related issues.

As the PDP navigates through these challenges, its focus remains on fostering unity and inclusivity within the party while upholding constitutional principles.
