From MATTHEW UGHENI, Delta
Contractors to Delta State Government are jittery over the threat by the state government for prompt payment to those who deliver their jobs according to specifications.
Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, speaking during an inspection of the reconstruction of the Olomoro–Igbide Road in Isoko South Local Government Area, as well as the ongoing work on Sector C2 of the Ughelli–Asaba Expressway, weekend assured that the Ughelli-Asaba Road dualisation project would soon be completed.
Oborevwori stated that the people of the state are happy because they were elected to serve and deliver meaningful development and that when the people are satisfied, that brings him joy.
Oborevwori emphasised that the happiness of the people is the ultimate measure of success in governance.
He emphasised that the positive feedback from residents was a clear testament to his government’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development.
The Governor expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of work being carried out on the Igbide-Olomoro and Ughelli-Asaba Road dualisation.
He noted that the MORE Agenda of his administration’s development blueprint, was already yielding tangible results that address the needs and aspirations of Deltans.
“I am impressed with the speed and quality of work being delivered. I visited here in March, and the contractors assured me that Sector C1 would be completed by May. From what I am seeing, they are on track. This project will soon be completed.
“We have received a lot of commendations from commuters using this road. It now takes less than two hours to travel from Asaba to Ughelli. This 143-kilometre road is a major achievement, and it’s clear that people are benefiting from it,” he said.
Meanwhile, some contractors have disagreed with the position of the Governor that payment would be made according to specifications.
According to those who do not want to be mentioned, they said the Governor should consider the value of naira some years ago and the present reality.
“Prices of materials have gone up astronomically while interest rates have equally gone up. We are finding it hard now to meet up but definitely not to specifications. There is certainly a need for review,” a contractor stated.
