Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has ordered a thorough investigation into allegations of poor feeding of frontline troops in the North East Theatre of Operations.
This directive was made known by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement released in Abuja.
Brig.-Gen. Nwachukwu emphasized that the welfare of troops is a top priority for the Nigerian Army, as it is a vital pillar of the COAS Command Philosophy aimed at motivating the force.
He assured the public and army personnel that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted to ascertain the truth behind the claims.
The army spokesman acknowledged that while the Nigerian army has always prioritized the welfare of troops, including their nutrition, there may be isolated incidents where lapses occur.
He stated that these incidents will be addressed squarely, and an internal investigation has already been initiated to determine the veracity of the allegations. The investigation will examine the supply chain, quality of food provided, and any other contributing factors.
Brig.-Gen. Nwachukwu emphasized the Nigerian army’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that any form of negligence or misconduct will not be condoned. If culpability is found, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken, and immediate corrective measures will be implemented to prevent future occurrences.
Personnel were urged to report any grievances or concerns regarding their feeding arrangements through established channels for feedback. Prompt action will be taken to address legitimate complaints.
The Nigerian army remains resolute in its fight against insurgency and other security challenges. It is committed to providing necessary support and care to ensure soldiers are well-fed, motivated, and equipped to defend the nation.
