The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) is set to resume crude oil exploration in the Kolmani oilfields, located between Gombe and Bauchi states, according to its CEO, Bayo Ojulari.
In an interview, Ojulari confirmed that the company has completed necessary evaluations and is ready to restart drilling activities in the region, a project that once raised high hopes in northern Nigeria when first launched in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“NNPCL is ready to resume oil drilling in Kolmani. We have completed critical assessments and are set to move forward,” Ojulari said. He highlighted the dual goal of the initiative not only to boost national oil output but also to stimulate regional economic development.
“This effort will bring progress to the North, attract new industries, and revive existing ones,” he added.
Ojulari also pointed to progress on the Ajaokuta Kano (AKK) gas pipeline as part of NNPCL’s broader strategy to improve energy access, reduce transport costs, and power industries across the North.
Personalizing his appeal, Ojulari emphasized his northern roots, noting his upbringing in Kaduna and education in Zaria. “I want the people of the North to support me in this job so that together, we can bring development to the region and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.
Addressing rumors of friction between NNPCL and the Dangote Group, Ojulari dismissed any tension and praised Aliko Dangote’s efforts in the energy sector. He assured that both entities will collaborate to ensure affordable fuel access for Nigerians.
The Kolmani project, initially celebrated as a breakthrough in diversifying Nigeria’s oil production beyond the Niger Delta, had faced delays due to logistical and technical setbacks. With operations now resuming, stakeholders are watching closely to see if the renewed push delivers on its economic promises.
