The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has instructed all its members nationwide to participate fully in the indefinite industrial action declared by organized labour. This strike addresses issues concerning the minimum wage and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
In a letter addressed to all branch chairpersons and zone coordinators, ASUU directed the leadership in various universities to mobilize their members for compliance with the strike. The letter, dated June 2, 2024, and signed by ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, emphasized the necessity of joining the strike due to the government’s failure to conclude renegotiations on the minimum wage for Nigerian workers and to reverse the increase in electricity tariffs.
The letter stated, “Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as affiliate members of congress. Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilize all members to participate in the strike action.”
ASUU’s participation strengthens the nationwide industrial action initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) aimed at securing better living conditions for Nigerian workers.
