League leaders Arsenal were forced to a 1–1 draw by 10-man Chelsea in a tempestuous London derby on Sunday.
Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo was shown a red card for a dangerous challenge on Mikel Merino late in the first half. Despite the setback, Trevoh Chalobah headed the Blues into the lead early in the second half before Merino equalised for Arsenal.
Arsenal remain five points ahead of Manchester City and six above Chelsea, but the Gunners left Stamford Bridge frustrated after missing a chance to widen the title gap. Chelsea, meanwhile, will take positives from their gritty display.
The derby was littered with heavy tackles, VAR drama, near-misses and relentless duels. Arsenal were also without injured defender William Saliba.
Chelsea’s 18-year-old sensation Estevao Willian, fresh from impressing against Barcelona in midweek, failed to convert Chelsea’s early chances. Enzo Fernández also tested goalkeeper David Raya as the Blues pressed high.
The match took an ugly turn in the 38th minute when Caicedo’s foul on Merino—initially given as a yellow card—was upgraded to a red after review. Moments later, Piero Hincapié elbowed Chalobah, sparking more protests from Chelsea fans.
Chalobah eventually gave Chelsea the lead in the 48th minute after glancing home a Reece James corner. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta responded by introducing Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke, and the changes paid off shortly after.
Bukayo Saka danced past Marc Cucurella and delivered a pinpoint cross for Merino, who powered in a header for his fourth goal of the season.
Despite waves of pressure from both sides until the final whistle, neither team could find a winner.
