The APC Loyalists Forum, represented by a group of protesters, has intensified calls for transparency and accountability by urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into allegations of corruption against former Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle.

Gathering at the EFCC headquarters, protesters from Zamfara State rallied for the reopening of investigations into Matawalle’s tenure, marked by accusations of contract diversion and embezzlement amounting to N70 billion. Armed with placards and a petition, they demanded scrutiny of all petitions against Matawalle, particularly concerning the alleged misappropriation of funds designated for projects across the state’s local government areas.

Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, received the protest letter on behalf of the chairman, affirming the commission’s commitment to pursuing every corruption case to its logical conclusion.

This demonstration follows the EFCC’s revelation in May 2023 of an ongoing investigation into Matawalle for suspected N70 billion fraud. The commission alleged that Matawalle diverted project funds, engaging in phantom contracts and illicitly transferring billions through intermediaries and contractors.

According to EFCC findings, over 100 companies received payments without delivering services to the state. Some contractors reportedly disclosed being coerced to return funds to Matawalle in US dollars through his aides after converting them.

Furthermore, the EFCC disclosed the recovery of N300 million from Fezel Nigeria Limited, a company linked to the Zamfara Investment Company.

The protesters’ demand for accountability and the EFCC’s commitment to investigating corruption cases underscore the ongoing scrutiny of Matawalle’s alleged malfeasance, despite his current ministerial appointment.
