Police in Anambra State have arrested a 24-year-old man, Muanaenye Chekwube, for allegedly kidnapping his friend in Uli, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed this on Sunday, said the suspect planned the abduction with his gang members and collected a ransom equivalent to N5.3 million in dollars before the victim was released.
He said the suspect, who admitted to the crime, is currently cooperating with the police and is providing more information to help apprehend his accomplices.
He assured that the suspect will be prosecuted upon conclusion of the investigation.
“Police operatives attached to Uli Divisional Headquarters, in the evening of 26th June 2025, exposed and arrested one Muanaenye Chekwube Victor ‘M’, aged 24 years, over a reported case of kidnapping.
“The case, which is under investigation, revealed that the suspect planned the kidnapping and collected a ransom in dollars equivalent to N5.3 million with his gang members before the victim was released.
“The suspect, during interrogation, confessed to having orchestrated the plot by luring his friend to escort him to visit another friend.
“Victor and his criminal gang allegedly abducted their friend and, to avoid suspicion, pretended he had also been kidnapped by the gang.
“Meanwhile, he is now cooperating with the police, providing information to help apprehend his accomplices and will face prosecution at the conclusion of the investigation.
“The Command remains committed to improving safety and security in the state,” the police statement read.
