Abia PDP chair warns Ibadan convention may silence South East

Abia State PDP Chairman, Amah Abraham, has cautioned that holding the national convention in Ibadan without completing congresses in the Southeast would effectively “silence” the region.

Speaking on ARISE News, Abraham argued that the party must adhere strictly to its internal guidelines and the Electoral Act before convening the convention.

“The simple implication,” he said, “is that if we are going to Ibadan for any congress, the Southeast, with about 70% of its delegates, will not be able to participate. That means you are technically trying to silence the voice of the Southeast.”

He cited letters jointly signed by Damagum and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu notifying INEC of planned congresses in 12–14 states, including Anambra, Ebonyi, and Cross River. However, he said Damagum later sent another letter—without Anyanwu’s signature—postponing those congresses indefinitely.

Abraham warned that proceeding with the convention despite these irregularities would deepen mistrust. “The PDP must be seen to follow its own rules,” he said. “The convention cannot be built on an improper foundation.”

The Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier halted the exercise, ruling that the party failed to meet electoral guidelines. But in a dramatic twist, the Oyo State High Court cleared the PDP to proceed, directing INEC to attend and monitor the convention.
