His Excellency, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON, is a Nigerian politician and lawyer currently serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory since August 2023. He was the governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023.
An illustrious son of Ikwerre ethnic nationality from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, he is the national leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and a graduate of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology.
Education
Chief Nyesom Wike attended Government Secondary School Eneka in Obiakpor, Rivers State where he sat for his O’level exams before proceeding to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RUST). He obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from RUST before proceeding to Law School in 1997. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Political and Administrative Studies from RUST.
In March 2025, Wike was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Law by the University of Calabar, during the 37th convocation ceremony.
Political Career
In 1999, Wike was elected as the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State. He held this position until 2007 having been elected twice.
In 2004, while in office, he served as the Deputy President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), and was later elected the President of the association. He was also an African representative in the Commonwealth Local Governments Forum.
In 2007, Wike was appointed the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi. He was also appointed the Director-General of Amaechi’s re-election campaign in 2011. Wike held the position of Chief of Staff until 2011 when President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him as the Minister of State for Education.
In September 2013, following the sack of the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqayatu, Wike was appointed the Minister of Education. Wike later voluntarily resigned to contest for the Governorship of Rivers State.
On 8th December 2014, he won the Rivers State People’s Democratic Party gubernatorial election primaries and subsequently won the general elections in April 2015 alongside his running mate, Dr. Ipalibo Banigo.
Wike was re-elected as the Governor of Rivers State in the 2019 general elections – on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party.
In March 2022, he declared his interest to run for the Presidency during the 2023 general elections.
In May 2022, he contested for the People’s Democratic Party presidential ticket but lost to Atiku Abubakar.
Leadership Style/Philosophy
Chief Nyesom Wike believes proper Education can make Nigeria great again. His style of Leadership tends towards a liberal approach to development and progress of the followers.
Projects
- During his tenure in the federal ministry of Education, Wike spearheaded a nationwide reform of the nation’s education system, though some programs such as the:
- Creation of access to quality education for 9 million Almajiri children in Northern Nigeria through the construction of dedicated schools in affected states
- Construction of basic education vocational training schools for out-of-school children in Southern Nigeria
- Construction of Special Girl-Education Schools for less privileged girls in 16 states of the country.
- Free distribution of books across the nation, through which over sixty million textbooks and library resource materials have been distributed
- Initiation of training of close to 500,000 basic education teachers and school administrators
And as Rivers state governor, he successfully executed several landmark projects including:
- Construction of three major flyovers in Port Harcourt; specifically in Garrison, Rumuokoro and Artillery.
- Completion of Rivers State Cassava Processing Plant which is boosting agricultural productivity
- Created three new campuses for the Rivers State University
- Established a College of Medical Sciences in the state university
- Developed a Real Madrid Football Academy to address youth development
- Established a Cancer/Cardiovascular Disease Centre
Reforms
As governor of Rivers State, and in line with his plans for educational reform, Nyesom Wike declared public primary and secondary education free. In 2019, Wike through the State Ministry of Education announced free registration for participating locals of the state in the annual JAMB examination.
In 2022, he signed a bill into law that strengthens a women’s right to inherit property. Upon signing the bill, he encouraged women to claim what is theirs and said they should not be afraid to do so because it is their legal right.
Projects
During his second term as a governor, he kicked-off the construction of three major flyovers simultaneously in Port Harcourt. The location of the flyovers is at Garrison, Rumuokoro and Artillery.
WIKE AS FCT MINISTER
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, appointed Wike as minister of the FCT on 16 August 2023, following his nomination, screening and approval by the senate.
In less than three years in office, Chief Nyesom Wike’s tenure as FCT Minister is widely recognized for driving massive infrastructural development, restoring the original Abuja Master Plan, and significantly boosting security. His key achievements include the rehabilitation of the Abuja Light Rail, massive road constructions, the reduction of crime through the “Operation Sweep” task force, and key administrative reforms.
Specific highlights of his administration’s achievements include:
Infrastructure & Urban Renewal
- Transportation: Successfully revived the previously moribund Abuja Metro Line (Abuja Light Rail). He also oversaw the completion and commissioning of major capital projects including the Southern Parkway, the Wuye Interchange, and the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX).
- Road Networks: Constructed, rehabilitated, and expanded over 200 kilometers of roads across both the city center and the satellite towns.
- Public Buildings: Advanced the construction of key national projects, including the official residence of the Vice President and the first phase of the Federal Secretariat complex.
Security & Safety
- “Operation Sweep”: Launched this specialized security task force to combat kidnapping, “one-chance” robberies, and other crimes across all six Area Councils.
- Logistics Support: Distributed hundreds of operational vehicles, communication gadgets, and logistics support to conventional security agencies, local vigilantes, and hunters’ groups.
- Infrastructure: Initiated the construction of 12 new Divisional Police Stations and staff quarters across the FCT to improve police presence.
Administrative & Institutional Reforms
- Civil Service Commission: Spearheaded the creation of the FCT Civil Service Commission, which boosted staff morale, career progression, and administrative efficiency.
- Taxation Reforms: Streamlined FCT revenue collection to prevent double taxation and improve the territory’s internally generated revenue (IGR).
- Mandate Secretariats: Created new operational bodies, such as the Mandate Secretariat for Youth Development, to improve governance and service delivery to residents.
Healthcare & Education
- School Rehabilitation: Repaired multiple dilapidated public schools across the FCT to provide a better learning environment for students.
- Public Health: Implemented proactive and aggressive measures to prevent disease outbreaks, such as cholera, ensuring improved public health safety, amongst other achievements in less than three years in office as FCT Minister.
