The Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has celebrated the 53rd anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing the Scheme as a vital force for national unity, youth empowerment, and nation-building in Nigeria.
Speaking during the anniversary celebration held in Abuja on Friday, the Minister commended the NYSC for its enduring contributions to fostering peace, understanding, and integration among young Nigerians from different ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds.
Olawande described the Scheme as a “powerful symbol of sacrifice, patriotism, resilience, and national integration,” noting that for over five decades, it has continued to shape responsible citizens committed to national development.
“The NYSC has continued to unite young Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and cultural divides, fostering friendship, understanding, and national cohesion,” the Minister stated.
He further explained that the iconic khaki uniform worn by corps members represents more than a dress code, stressing that it symbolizes dedication to community service and commitment to the progress of the nation.
The Minister praised the leadership and management of the NYSC for sustaining the ideals and objectives of the Scheme despite evolving national challenges and changing realities. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting programmes and initiatives aimed at empowering youths and strengthening national unity.
The event attracted top NYSC officials, management staff, serving and former corps members, as well as stakeholders from different sectors, who gathered to reflect on the achievements and impact of the Scheme since its establishment 53 years ago.
Participants at the celebration highlighted the role of the NYSC in promoting cultural exchange, community development, and patriotism among Nigerian youths, while calling for continued support to enhance its operations and relevance in the country.
Since its inception in 1973, the NYSC has remained one of Nigeria’s foremost platforms for youth engagement and national integration, deploying graduates across states to contribute to development and strengthen unity among citizens.
