Soludo Plans Three Airports, New Cities for Anambra

Anambra State Governor , Professor Chukwuma Soludo , has announced plans for three airports in Anambra State as part of a long-term strategy to transform the state’s infrastructure and economy.
The announcement came during his second-term swearing-in ceremony at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.
His deputy, Dr. Onyekachi Ibezim, was also sworn in by the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onichie Anyachebulu.
Soludo highlighted that with the state’s population projected to reach 40 million by 2070 and nearly 50 million by 2100, urgent planning is needed.
“The state will require at least three airports, but in the next ten years there will hardly be any space for them except we act today,” he said.
The governor outlined a comprehensive infrastructure agenda, including four new cities and districts: New Niger City near Onitsha, Awka 2.0, the Anambra Mixed-Use Industrial City (AMIC), an Aerotropolis, and an Innovation District—our own Silicon Valley.
Key plans, including the Anambra Rail Masterplan and Gas Masterplan, have been completed, while construction of a 5-star hotel at the International Convention Centre and the Coordinated Wholesale Centre—set to be West Africa’s largest drug market—are underway.
Soludo emphasized that these projects will boost jobs, enhance trade, and attract private investment.
“In a few years, the second airport and a thriving nascent city around it will be delivered, and we will secure space for the third airport—laying foundations for future generations,” he said.
The governor invited Ndi Anambra and investors to participate in the transformation, describing these initiatives as imperatives for sustainable economic growth and improved livelihoods.
