Two men jailed six months for stealing iron poles

Two men, Isaac Michael, 24, and Shittu Sanni, 22, were on Tuesday sentenced to six months imprisonment each by an Igbosere Magistrate Court sitting in Tinubu, Lagos Island, for stealing scaffolding iron poles belonging to a hotel.

Magistrate Gbajumo Ayoku handed down the jail term after both men pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy, attempt to commit felony and stealing.

During the proceedings, the prosecutor, Inspector Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the incident occurred on July 13, 2025, at about 1:45 p.m., at No. 13B, Elegba Festival Drive, Oniru Estate, Victoria Island.

“The convicts and others who are still at large conspired among themselves and went to the property of the Golden Tulip Hotel,” Osuji said.

“They arrived in a mini-bus with plate number AAA 985 YK and began loading scaffolding iron poles valued at N45,000 each,” he said.

According to him, the convicts had no authorization from the hotel management to access the materials.

“They intended to cart away the iron poles and sell them for personal gain before they were apprehended,” Osuji added.

The prosecution said the offences contravene Sections 411 and 406 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

When the charges were read, both Michael and Sanni admitted guilt.

Following their plea, Magistrate Ayoku convicted and sentenced the two men to six months’ imprisonment each, noting that the sentence would run concurrently.

“The court finds both Michael and Sanni guilty as charged. You are hereby sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. The sentence is not run concurrently,” Ayoku held.

No option of a fine was provided.
