The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) said it has recorded over 410 deaths in various disasters that occurred in the state from 2024/25.

The Director General of the state Emergency Management Agency NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arab, disclosed this in a chat with journalists in his office in Minna yesterday.

He said, in spite of various challenges encountered during the period, the staff were doing their best to fulfill the mandate and responsibilities of the NSEMA effectively to attend to various emergencies across the state.

According to Arab, the first disaster recorded in the state in 2024 is the Tanker explosion in Agaie the headquarters of the Agaie Local Government Area which claimed 60 lives with eight persons injured.

Arab further explained that the Diko Tanker explosion which occurred on the 18th of January 2025 claimed over 80 lives, adding that during the period the agency has been in partnership with health services along with the immediate deployment of emergency teams to manage the situation.

On the dynamite explosion at Sabon Pegi, in Mariga Local Government Area, he said only two people died, while several houses were destroyed, and the government provided relief materials and cash to the affected.

“The recent one is the Mokwa flood disaster which displaces thousands of people, while 270 people lost their lives, NSEMA led the coordination, mobilised resources and deployed response teams in collaboration with the local government authorities,” he stated.

Arah further stated that before the rainy season NSEMA launched its annual flood sensitisation as an early warning campaign to all the eight Emirate councils in the state, aimed at increasing public awareness, with distribution of educational materials.

“NSEMA during the period also provided relief assistance to victims of both residential and commercial fire outbreaks across various parts of the state as intervention which includes distribution of Cash assistance,” he added.
