The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed off a three-storey building in Ilorin, the state capital, over environmental infractions by occupants of the building.

The building, which houses 30 rooms, is located at Gaa-Imam, behind Adisco International Works Company in Ilorin, and was sealed off due to lack of toilet facilities.

The Acting General Manager of the Agency, Hajia Idayat Folorunsho Adeola, who was represented by Sanitarian Nusirat Oyewole Temitope, led the enforcement team, explaining that the Agency had received series of complaints from the residents of the area that the occupants of the building often discharged human faeces to their compound through their filled up latrine, thereby causing offensive odour to the entire community.

Folorunsho, who expressed displeasure over the act of the occupants of the building, described it as very harmful to the health of residents of the community.

She explained that the decision to seal off the building was to enforce compliance with environmental laws and avert the imminent danger of outbreak of infectious diseases in the area.

Folorunsho, therefore, urged tenants, caretakers and house owners to always work together to ensure proper maintenance of their residences by making adequate provision for necessary sanitary facilities to avert breakdown of epidemic.
