Segun Sowunmi: I’ve Asked Atiku Twice About His 2027 Presidential Ambition

    Published on

Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has revealed that he has twice asked Atiku Abubakar, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, about his intentions for the 2027 presidential race. However, Sowunmi stated that Atiku has not openly discussed his plans with anyone.

Sowunmi emphasized the structural nature of the PDP, asserting that the party does not hand out tickets. He explained that every candidate, regardless of the position, must contest in the party’s primaries. “The PDP is a very structured party; we don’t ‘dash’ people the presidential ticket or any other ticket. Every PDP ticket, from councillor to the presidency, requires a contest in the primaries,” he said.

While acknowledging the early talk about the 2027 election, Sowunmi argued that the party should focus on strengthening its foundation before discussing future presidential candidates. He added, “It’s too early for the PDP to be talking about the 2027 presidential election. We need to fix the vehicle that will carry everyone there.”
